Lightened Astonishment

Lightened Astonishment
Looming in the distance dark clouds begin to show,
a fierce and faceless menace withing begins to grow.
Obscured by opaque clouds, countless flashing lights,
a single bolt comes crashing down to split the dark of night.
A vast barrage of thunder masks everything I say, while countless lurid flashes mock the light of day.
Flashing fingers in the sky extending one by one. Slashing down around us but see to touch us none.
Ah, none I say in error, this night is charged in full.
Electricity adorns our skin,we feel it's eerie pull.
Static ever building collects to raise my hair, but all at once is drawn away when a bolt strikes very near.
Sitting up atop a hill, taking it all in, awaiting its arrival is a game we'll never win.
Rapid strikes surround us, as if we're in a cage, we race back down the hill side to escape from the rage.
To taunt this awesome power, magnificent in strength, A witless act indeed, though we watched for some length.
With wondrous admiration, my buddy Herb and I watched it as it moved away across the western sky.
